I agree with your comments about how old games are "better" because you were a kid playing them, not because they were actually better. I was totally absorbed by Meal Gear Solid 1 as a 13-year-old, but not as much by 4 as a 24-year-old. I like MGS1 best partially because of the feeling I had playing it.
By the logic of that dumbass you mentioned, a primitive Atari game is better than any Super Mario game. I would play Super Mario 3 over any Atari game because I played Mario as a kid and remember the great experience, and I didn't play Atari games until my teens.
In relation to your discussion about PS1 downloads: I am put off about PS1 games on PSN. Most of the games are roughly $4.99. However, if you want a huge console-making title like Metal Gear Solid, Castlevania Symphony of the Night, or Final Fantasy VII, they are $9.99.
It's not because of the developer, and it's not because of length. They don't have to burn more coal to put these particular games out; they're still just batches of ones and zeros.
It's because they are the best/most acclaimed titles on the system, so they capitalize on it. Sure, it's capitalism, and sure, it's only $10. But it's still kind of a dick move influenced by greed.
